ICT Manpower Development

Information and communications technology (ICT) plays an important role in fuelling social and economic developments. It has become a major driving force for the globally competitive economy, underpinning innovation, competiveness and long-term prosperity. It is also taking shape as an economic sector in its own right. There are around 112 000 ICT professionals engaged in various business sectors; around 34% of them are involved in software design and development; and around 38% of them are providing infrastructure and operations support.

The OGCIO continues to foster closer academia-industry collaboration to work together to create an environment where a well qualified ICT manpower can flourish and meet the needs of a digital economy. We also encourage students to take up ICT programmes in their tertiary studies or even in secondary schools, and to become ICT professionals in their careers.

Student IT Corner
	In November 2013, we set up a “Student IT Corner” to provide information about IT studies, IT careers and IT motions, so as to let students better understand the ICT industry and its prospects.
Enriched IT Programme in Secondary Schools
	Schools are the best ground to scout and develop IT talents. Early exposure in IT coupled with intensive training on logical thinking and creative problem solving in students' formative years is conducive to nurturing their computational thinking ability to innovate at a young age. The OGCIO, with the support of the Education Bureau, launched the “Enriched IT Programme in Secondary Schools” in the 2015/16 school year.
IT Career Role Models Platform
	In order to encourage youngsters who were interested in engaging in the IT industry to make study/career decisions in accordance with their interests, abilities and orientations, we launched the “IT Career Role Models Platform” in November 2017 to provide up-to-date information on IT profession in local and multinational companies/enterprises of different industry sectors.
