Promoting ICT Adoption among SMEsThe vast majority of businesses in Hong Kong are the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and the extent of their adoption of information and communications technology (ICT) is key to Hong Kong’s development as a digital economy. Over the years, the Government and the ICT industry have joined hands to facilitate the wider adoption of ICT among SMEs. For example, the OGCIO’s Sector-specific Programme (SSP) and IT Training Programme for SMEs (ITTP) supported 20 projects for 14 business sectors [1] between 2004 and 2010. Over 14,000 practitioners from SMEs have benefited from these projects so far. However, there is still room for improvement. Given SMEs’ significance in Hong Kong’s economy, there needs to be continual initiatives to enhance their adoption of ICT.
In end August 2011, the Government has announced a new round of SSP on “Enhancing ICT Adoption among SMEs” in three industry sectors namely wholesale/retail, business services and import/export trade, which were recommended by the “Study on ICT Adoption in Hong Kong SMEs” commissioned by the Government in October 2009.
