Publicity programme launched to arouse public awareness of Y2K

July 4, 1998

The Government is intensifying its publicity for the Year 2000(Y2K) problem with a view to enhancing public awareness of the issue and encouraging them to help "fight the bug" now.

A spokesman for the Information Technology and Broadcasting Bureau said today (Saturday) that a radio Announcement of Public Interest (API) in both Chinese and English has been launched as part of its publicity package for the Year 2000 (Y2K) problem.

"A Television API with similar themes is being developed and will be launched as soon as possible", he added.

The spokesman pointed out that a dedicated Y2K web site (http://www.year2000.gov.hk) had also been launched on the Internet to provide updated information on the compliance situation within the Government.

"The web site also contains information on the best practices and guidelines on tackling the Y2K problem, where to seek help and pointers to other related sites.

In addition, a leaflet and a poster designed to urge the business sector to take early rectification action are being distributed through information technology organisations, professional bodies, trade associations, academic institutions and relevant Government departments."

The spokesman warned that the problem was extensive and potentially disastrous if not properly addressed.

"We need to raise awareness at all levels of our community and in particular among the business sector. We have to ensure that management put the resolution of this problem on the top of their agenda," the spokesman said.

The problem is not confined to computers. Embedded microprocessor based systems which are commonly used in various kinds of equipment and facilities, such as fire alarm systems, telecommunication systems and automated production lines are also at risk.

"Business office machines such as fax machines and closed circuit television can similarly be affected," he added.

The spokesman said the Government would continue to approach chambers of commerce, small and medium sized enterprise committees and professional bodies to enlist their support in appealing to their members and clients for immediate action.

Members of the public wishing to obtain more information on Y2K can also ring up theY2K Help Line operated by the Hong Kong Productivity Council at 2788 6060.

The Y2K leaflets are available from the Public Enquiry Service Centres of all 18 District Offices.
