HK, Singapore to forge closer co-operation in IT

September 24, 1999

Hong Kong and Singapore are set to forge closer co-operation and bilateral relationship in the field of information and communications technology.

The closer link will be sealed by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for Co-operation in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) between both places.

The draft text of the MOU was one of the topics discussed at a meeting between the Secretary for Information Technology and Broadcasting, Mr K C Kwong, and Singapore's Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Mr Yeo Cheow Tong, today (Friday).

Mr Kwong said he treasured the opportunity to work closely with Singapore in ICT development. The draft MOU has identified areas of common interest and co-operation, such as delivery of government services on-line, multi-media and software applications and products, electronic commerce, broadband networks and applications and Internet applications.

"Closer cooperation between Hong Kong and Singapore will help to promote the further development of ICT industries in both places and will be mutually beneficial," Mr Kwong said.

"I look forward to concluding the MOU as soon as practicable," he added.

Mr Kwong and his Singapore counterpart also discussed and exchanged views on other topics of common interest, including telecommunications, IT in education, e-commerce, and promoting IT in the community.
