17 - 07 - 2000
A leaflet containing tips on protection of computer against virus attacks is now available for public collection at various government offices.
Entitled "Keep Your Computer Virus-free", the leaflet is published by the Information Technology Services Department (ITSD) and aimed at arousing the public's awareness over computer virus.
"The application of information technology in work and daily life is gaining popularity rapidly in Hong Kong, but not many people are cautious of possible virus attacks to their computers which may cause real damage or financial loss," a spokesman for ITSD said today (July 17).
"The leaflet is therefore produced with a view to providing computer users with tips on the effective and safe computing practices to guard against computer virus," he said.
Installation of virus scanning and cleaning software in each computer, and regular updating of the virus scanning software from the supplier to detect new virus are examples of these computing practices.
The leaflet is now available for public collection at the following government offices:
- Community Halls, Community Centres and Public Enquiry Service Centres of District Offices under the Home Affairs Department;
- Post Offices;
- Public Libraries;
- The Small and Medium Enterprises Information Centre of the Trade and Industry Department; and
- Information Technology Services Department.
Members of the public can also view the leaflet by visiting the web site of ITSD (http://www.itsd.gov.hk/itsd/eng/about/epubdoc.htm).
"To better protect their computers, users are advised to check the ITSD web page on computer virus (http://www.itsd.gov.hk/itsd/eng/virus) and other virus monitoring sites regularly for information on new and destructive computer viruses," said the spokesman.
