Hong Kong participates in key China IT exhibition
22 - 11 - 2000

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) will for the first time take part in one of the most important information technology (IT) events of the year in the Mainland of China.

A Hong Kong Pavilion will be staged in the China International Municipal Information Infrastructure and Administration Exhibition 2000 (MII China 2000) which will be held in Beijing between November 23 and 26.

Government departments and some non-government organisations, led by the Information Technology and Broadcasting Bureau (ITBB) and the Information Technology Services Department (ITSD), will join the exhibition.

Through participating in this event, the HKSAR is offered an opportunity to showcase its achievements in the IT field, and the HKSAR Government's determination to develop Hong Kong as a leading digital city in the 21st century.

It is also a golden opportunity for the HKSAR to gain a better understanding of the vision of individual cities in the Mainland in the information era and how they put their vision into action.

To demonstrate that the HKSAR Government takes the lead in promoting the adoption of e-commerce and electronic transactions, various government IT initiatives will be displayed and introduced in the exhibition through information kiosks, workstations and display panels.

The Electronic Service Delivery scheme, one of the major initiatives under the "Digital 21" IT Strategy, through which members of the public are able to obtain round-the-clock public services via the Internet or other electronic means, is one of the major exhibits of the Hong Kong Pavilion.

Other major government initiatives to be exhibited include the Cyberport, Hong Kong Science Park, the Public Key Infrastructure, the Electronic Tendering System, and the Mapping Information Services through Internet Software.

Besides ITBB and ITSD, the other participating government departments are the Lands Department, the Government Supplies Department and the Hongkong Post.

Tech Centre, the Hong Kong Productivity Council, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the Hong Kong Tourist Association, the Open University of Hong Kong, and Tradelink Electronic Commerce Limited will also participate in the Hong Kong Pavilion.

The Hong Kong delegation to the MII China 2000 will be led by the Director of Information Technology Services, Mr Lau Kam-hung.

Mr Lau will join the officiating guests in the opening ceremony of the MII China 2000, and will deliver a speech in the Mayors' Forum of the MII China 2000 tomorrow (November 23).
