11 - 04 - 2001

The Information Technology Services Department (ITSD) has been awarded the first Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency (HKQAA) ISO 9001:2000 Certificate in information technology industry, recognising once again its conformity to a world-class quality standard.

The winners, the department's Professional Support Services (PSS) team, have implemented the ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management System and achieved the first HKQAA ISO 9001:2000 certificate status without any non-conformity.

In a presentation ceremony held today (April 11), the ITSD was presented with two ISO certificates for the PSS issued by the HKQAA and the International Certification Network respectively.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the Secretary for Information Technology and Broadcasting, Mrs Carrie Yau, said, "Being the first IT organisation to be awarded the ISO 9001:2000 certificate by the Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency, ITSD will act as a role model for the IT industry.

"The success of ITSD in achieving this ISO certification will help to raise awareness within the Hong Kong IT industry of the importance of software quality for enhancing productivity and efficiency so as to maintain competitiveness," Mrs Yau said.

In support of the various services of the ITSD, PSS provides consultancy support to systems development methodologies, quality management and methodology training.

Also speaking at the presentation ceremony, the Director of Information Technology Services, Mr Lau Kam-hung, said achieving ISO certification was just the beginning of the department's journey of continuous quality improvement.

"The new ISO 9001:2000 standard puts great emphasis on the requirement to have continual improvement," he said.

"As the information technology industry is changing and evolving rapidly and the public demand for quality services from government is increasing, we need to continuously improve and provide better services to the public."

"We will conscientiously discharge our obligations to clients and the community, uphold the highest standards of knowledge, practices and ethics, and strive to be a role model in the information technology community," he said.

ISO 9000 is an international standard for quality management systems. It specifies the quality system requirements and provides a framework to establish, document and maintain an effective quality management system in order to meet client requirements and to achieve customer satisfaction.
