Seminar to promote awareness on web site accessibility
11 - 09 - 2001
Webmasters, web page designers and interested parties are welcome
to join a seminar to be held later this month to promote the
awareness on enhancing the accessibility of Internet web pages.
Jointly organised by the Information Technology Services Department
(ITSD) and the Social Welfare Department of the Hong Kong Special
Adminstrative Region Government, the seminar is aimed at introducing
to the information technology (IT) industry and the general
public the usability and accessibility considerations in web
site implementation.
"The emergence and development of the Internet has made access
to information and services easier and cheaper, but nowadays
there are still a lot of web sites inaccessible to people with
disabilities," said a spokesman for the ITSD today (September
11).
"The Government is concerned about making web sites and electronically
available content accessible to all groups of people in the
community including those with disabilities.
"The seminar is one of the government activities promoting the
importance of web accessibility to people with disabilities
and how to improve web sites," he said.
To be held on September 28, the seminar will introduce the underlying
design concepts and techniques to make web site accessible to
people with disabilities, in particular the visually impaired.
The topics to be discussed in the seminar include Government's
initiative to improve the accessibility of its homepages, spirit
of the Disability Discrimination Ordinance, technologies facilitating
access to web pages, design and technical implementation considerations
in improving web accessibility, experience sharing and demonstrations
on access technologies for people with disabilities.
The seminar will be held at Theatre 1, Hong Kong Convention
and Exhibition Centre, Wan Chai, Hong Kong, from 2.15 pm to
5.30 pm on September 28.
The seminar is free of charge and will be conducted in Cantonese.
Webmasters, web page designers and people who are interested
in the seminar can obtain more information and make on-line
registration at the "Digital 21" web site ( http://www.info.gov.hk/digital21/eng/events/seminar0928.html ).
"Information on tips for improving accessibility of web pages
is also available at the 'Digital 21' web site for public reference,"
said the spokesman.
