Applications for Sponsorship Scheme for Summer IT Exchange Programmes invited
June 6, 2002
University departments and student societies of IT-related disciplines of the eight UGC-funded institutions are invited to apply for a pilot Sponsorship Scheme for Summer IT Exchange Programmes with Overseas Tertiary Institutions from today (June 6).
The Information Technology and Broadcasting Bureau (ITBB) will provide sponsorships for full-time university students studying in IT-related disciplines in Hong Kong to participate in exchange programmes with overseas tertiary institutions during this summer vacation. Air tickets, accommodation and local transportation in overseas countries can be covered by the sponsorship. The maximum sponsorship for each programme is $100,000.
A spokesman for the ITBB noted the Scheme has four objectives: (1) to intensify exchange between Hong Kong and overseas students in IT-related disciplines; (2) to improve the standard of English of our students in IT-related disciplines; (3) to widen exposure and international outlook of our students in IT-related disciplines and (4) to enhance IT competence of students in IT-related disciplines through briefings, visits, etc. during the exchange programme.
"In the new information economy which emphasizes on knowledge, innovation and technology competency, the success of a leading digital city is directly linked to the quality and skills of its manpower. We believe that professionals in the IT field should require a high degree of international exposure. By participating in these exchange programmes, it is hoped that our IT students would develop a broader and more international outlook." the spokesman said.
Application forms and guidance notes have already been sent to the eight UGC-funded institutions and are also available at the ITBB website at http://www.info.gov.hk/itbb. The deadline for application is June 15, 2002.
