29 - 05 - 2005

Hong Kong's digital entertainment industry has made a successful presentation of its creativity and talent to industry players around the globe at the renowned Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2005 held in Los Angeles, the United States from May 18 to 20.

More than 60 representatives from 21 local digital entertainment companies joined a delegation led by the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (OGCIO) and the Hong Kong Productivity Council to showcase their outstanding productions and services at the Hong Kong Pavilion set up with the assistance of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council at the E3.

The pavilion adopted the theme "World Beyond Imagination" to present and demonstrate game and "edutainment" software developed by Hong Kong companies. Also on display were the winning entries of the Hong Kong Digital Entertainment Excellence Awards 2004 and the Xbox Games Incubation Programme, which were both sponsored by the Government to enhance the creativity and competitiveness of the industry.

The pavilion also featured a series of traditional Kung Fu demonstrations to highlight the outstanding achievements of Hong Kong as a centre of film and digital entertainment productions featuring Kung Fu.

With the assistance of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, renowned international games companies, such as Tooned In, Konami Digital Entertainment, Electronic Arts, Blizzard Entertainment, KEMCO USA and Ubisoft Entertainment, were arranged to have business matching with the Hong Kong delegation.

Relevant officials responsible for the digital entertainment industry from the Mainland and Taiwan also paid visit to the Hong Kong Pavilion and exchanged views on industry promotion and collaboration.

The Assistant Government Chief Information Officer, Ms Subrina Chow, who led the delegation, said that the pavilion had successfully presented Hong Kong's digital entertainment production and services to the E3 visitors.

"We are very satisfied with the result of the exhibition as our companies received quite a number of business enquiries. Some of the visitors showed great interest in our productions.

"This is the third time that the Government has sponsored the setting up of a Hong Kong pavilion at E3. We have had the largest delegation so far and are pleased with the enthusiastic support that the local industry has shown towards this joint marketing effort. We will continue to promote award-winning and outstanding Hong Kong productions at international trade events so as to build a distinguishable brand for our industry," she said.

Apart from taking part in the E3, part of the Hong Kong delegation also visited the Integrated Media Systems Centre of the University of Southern California to learn about the latest digital entertainment technologies. Dedicated to multimedia and Internet research, the centre has developed unique immersive and streaming technologies that are expected to change the Internet experience for ordinary users in the not too distant future.

Organised for the 11th year, the E3 is one of the world's leading trade events dedicated to showcasing the latest interactive entertainment and educational software and related products. More than 400 companies from 80 countries joined the expo this year.
