Some people may worry that by making the website accessible, the website will become dull and unappealing. The above-mentioned tips do not discourage web developers to use images, graphics or multimedia contents. They just explain how web contents can be made more accessible. Indeed, simplicity is the secret. Many of the world's famous and popular web sites, including portal sites, auction site etc have a simple web design, notwithstanding containing a lot of text information and a simple navigation framework for all users to obtain information easily.

Work by governments

Many government and international organizations have established guidelines and even laws related to accessibility. The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is also requiring its bureaux and departments to make the information dissemination and service delivery via the Internet more accessible to the community. An internal guideline, "Guidelines on Dissemination of Information Through Government Homepages", has been set up for this purpose.

It is our Government's policy to strive to provide access to public services and information to everybody in the community. Currently around 5,600 public computers with Internet connection have been installed at various places for free public use, and some are equipped with special devices for the disabled.

Accessibility helps to make our websites easily read not only by people with disability but also by other viewers. It opens up more business opportunities and is beneficial to both the community and enterprises.
