Seminar on "Building a Customer-centric & Accessible Website - The GovHK Experience"

Organised by the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer, the seminar was held on 31 August 2007 at the Lecture Theatre, 1/F, HKPC Building.
At the seminar, speakers shared their experience in developing GovHK (www.gov.hk), the one-stop shop for online government information and services, their view on the importance of engaging the customers, the approach of GovHK in building a truly inclusive website, as well as how to optimise website to improve search rankings.
Two half-day sessions were held in the morning and afternoon respectively, attracting nearly 170 audiences. The seminar was very well received and most audiences found the presentations inspiring and ranked high on the seminar's usefulness.

The speaker shared the experience in developing GovHK, the new one-stop portal of the HKSAR Government, with emphasis on making the portal citizen-centric with inputs obtained from a series of customer research and consultations with representative bodies.

A high proportion of web traffic is driven by search engines. The first thing many users do is typing a keyword in the search box especially on a large website. This session discussed the benefits of optimizing your website for better search rankings and the DOs and DON'Ts on search engine optimization.

This presentation discussed the common barriers encountered by visually impaired people in using the web, the different needs of people with varying degree of visual impairment.

This presentation discussed "eLife and Web accessibility", how to create a website catering for specific needs of people with visual impairment, and how to increase opportunities of all people by the accessible website.

The speaker discussed the special accessibility features in GovHK and how GovHK has gone far beyond basic accessibility to create a website that is truly inclusive. Optimizing GovHK to improve search engine rankings and the use of a Web Content Management System in ensuring a consistent user experience in GovHK were also discussed.
