  Web Accessibility Seminar 2006
"Barrier-free Webpage Benefits All in the New Information Age"
(27 October 2006)

Organized by the Information Technology Resources Centre of Hong Kong Council of Social Service and supported by Office of the Government Chief Information Officer, the Web Accessibility Seminar 2006 was held on 27 October 2006 at the Exhibition Hall, 4/F, HKPC Building, with the aim of providing audience the key concepts and techniques to make websites accessible to all, including people with disabilities. A wide range of computer assistive devices was displayed in the mini-exhibition hall at the same time. The Seminar was well received by about 160 audience.

"Help the Blind to Help Themselves"

Mr. HA See-hung, Bennet, Author of Windows Light Screen Reading Software

Mr. Ha has developed Windows Light, a Windows-based screen reading software, as a tool to help the visually impaired address the "digital divide" issue. As a visually impaired person, he shared his first-hand experience of the challenges he faced in relation to the "digital divide", and how windows Light could help the blind live up to these challenges. A demonstration of how the present version of the software functions was also given.

"Accessible Web Design and Equal Opportunity"

The continual success of internet depends very much upon its accessibility for all. Some disadvantaged sectors of the community may not be able to share the fruit of this invention due to some physical or technological limitations. These limitations can be largely reduced and equal opportunity for all can be achieved if universal design is adopted.

A mini-exhibition to display a wide range of computer assistive device for people with disabilities, including English/Cantonese screen readers, Braille display, screen magnifier, scanning keyboard, suck and blow switch and etc.

"Assistive Technology in Accessing Web Pages"

Professor LU Qin, Associate Head, Department of Computing, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Professor Lu first introduced the basic concept of web accessibility. She also introduced the feature of Chinese system, and how assistive technology helped visually impaired read the content in the computer. Finally, she pointed out what settings were available in the computer to enhance the accessibility, and what good practices could be adopted in designing homepages.

"Building Web Sites with Accessibility Features"

Mr. Peter TY, Developer Evangelist, Microsoft Hong Kong

Making software usable and accessible to a wide range of users, especially those with special needs are becoming increasingly important. This session discussed how accessibility issues could be taken into consideration during planning and design stage of a web application using ASP.NET, and how to use the tools to implement the necessary features effectively.
