Tsinghua team wins Asia regional computing contest

The computer programming team from Tsinghua University scored the highest points in a regional programming contest first ever hosted in Hong Kong today (October 28).
The team has participated in the Asia Regional Contest, Hong Kong, 2000 of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) International Collegiate Programming Contest jointly organised by the Information Technology Services Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government and the ACM Hong Kong Chapter.
In competition with 34 other teams coming from different Asian higher education institutes to solve six programming problems within the maximum contest time of four hours, the Tsinghua University team won the overall championship while The University of Hong Kong won the championship of the HKSAR.
The Tsinghua University (top-scoring) team will compete with the winning teams of other regional contests in the World Finals of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest to be held in Vancouver, Canada, in March 2001.
The objectives of the Asian Regional Contest are to provide opportunities for the Asian students to meet, to establish friendship and to demonstrate and sharpen their problem-solving and computing skills.
The interest and knowledge of local students in the use of information technology will also be enhanced through taking part in the competition.
Contestants in a total of 35 teams coming from Mainland China, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Taiwan and Hong Kong participated in the contest which was held in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Hong Kong, between 1:30 pm and 5:30 pm today.
Last year, the Chinese University of Hong Kong represented Hong Kong and came eighth in the World Finals.
