"Ten Healthy Websites Contest" presentation ceremony

January 5, 2001

"Ten Healthy Websites Contest" has been jointly organised by Television and Entertainment Licensing Authority (TELA), Information Technology and Broadcasting Bureau, Commission on Youth, Home-School Co-operation Committee, Information Technology Services Department, Home Affairs Department, Social Welfare Department, Education Department, Radio Television Hong Kong, Hong Kong Council of Social Service, Hong Kong Internet Service Providers Association, The Breakthrough Ltd. and IT Hong Kong from September to December 2000.

"The contest aims to encourage young people to surf websites with healthy and useful information on the Internet. In addition, by recognising the work of the authors of healthy websites, Internet service providers, content providers and publishers will be motivated to create more websites with healthy contents," a spokesman for TELA explained.

The contest was well received and more than ten thousand youngsters cast their votes. The ten healthy websites with the highest number of votes are:

(1) www.info.gov.hk
(2) www.english4us.com
(3) www.singtao.com
(4) www.hongkong.com
(5) www.youth-2000.com
(6) www.greenpower.org.hk
(7) www.mingpao.com
(8) www.yahoo.com
(9) www.kmb.com.hk
(10) www.iyellowbus.com

All prizes will be distributed at the presentation ceremony to be held in the Wanchai Elizabeth Stadium tonight (January 5).

"The themes of these ten healthy websites vary from news to information, environment protection, activities for young people, education and child cultures etc. No matter which style the websites may take, they are all able to provide rich and healthy information in interesting and user-friendly format. The information in these websites are updated from time to time. They are therefore popular among the young people," the TELA spokesman said.

The spokesman also said that the contest provided young people with an excellent opportunity to learn to analyse information on the Internet, which would enable them to identify indecent and obscene materials therein.

As the "Ten Healthy Websites Contest" was held with overwhelming success, TELA will organise the contest again in the second half of this year by TELA.
