Broadband traffic video service launched
September 15, 2001
As part of the continuous effort to enhance government services provided through the Internet, a Broadband Traffic Video Service has been launched to complement the current Road Traffic Information Services which show only still images of road traffic conditions.
The broadband version provides streaming video of road traffic conditions of selected key areas on Hong Kong Island, in Kowloon, Tsuen Wan and along the Tuen Mun Road. The content of the webcast is the same as that available to the two television stations but the service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week on the Internet.
"We envisage that with more and more people having broadband access to the Internet, they will find this new service a big improvement over the still-image version. The public can now check the road traffic condition anywhere and anytime before starting their journey to avoid possible delays," a spokesman for the Information Technology and Broadcasting Bureau said today (September 15).
"We have designed the system to support multiple platforms. Users on a variety of platforms, be it Windows, Unix, Linux or Mac OS, are able to enjoy the same service," the spokesman added.
The new video service can support up to 1,000 simultaneous users. In order to enable viewers a fair access to the service, the viewing time will be limited to five minutes per viewer. At the end of the viewing period, the system will automatically release the session to other users.
The Broadband Traffic Video Service is accessible via the web site at www.igsd.gov.hk/webcast. It is also available on the Transport Department's homepage at www.info.gov.hk/td.
