Asia IT Ministers' Conference held in Hong Kong
October 28, 2001
Secretary for Information Technology and Broadcasting, Mrs Carrie Yau, participated in the Asia IT Ministers' Conference today (October 28).
Speaking at the conference, Mrs Yau said, "Despite the bursting of the dot.com bubble, the trend of e-business is irreversible. The Internet has fundamentally changed the way in which business is conducted. Online technologies have enabled businesses to expand their markets beyond geographical and time boundaries, provide user-friendly and value added services to their clients and streamline their supply chains to enhance efficiency and productivity.
"With the huge population in Asia and the development of market with great potential, e.g. Mainland China after the accession to WTO, we see good prospect for IT development in Asia," she added. Mrs Yau also presented the 2001 Digital 21 IT Strategy of Hong Kong at the Conference.
The Asia IT Ministers' Conference, chaired by Dr Heizo Takenaka, Minister of State for IT Policy in Japan, was held in Hong Kong today. The Conference was organised as a side programme of the World Economic Forum's East Asia Economic Summit 2001 with a view to enhancing policy coordination among Asian nations that are taking active actions for the promotion of information technology. The IT Ministers exchanged views in the Conference on the formulation of policies and initiatives in their respective economies to harness IT for driving further growth in Asia.
Other places taking part in the conference were Mainland China, India, Republic of Korea, Malaysia and Singapore.
Mrs Yau also had a meeting with Dr Heizo Takenaka today to discuss the recent IT developments in Japan and Hong Kong prior to the Asia IT Ministers' Conference. Mrs Yau and Dr Takenaka agreed that there was scope for further collaboration between Hong Kong and Japan in the fields of IT, telecommunications and digital entertainment.
