IT delegation on familiarization tour to US, Canada

A Hong Kong IT delegation, led by Deputy Secretary for Information Technology and Broadcasting, Mr Alan Siu, left Hong Kong yesterday (October 31) on an eight-day visit to the United States and Canada.

The delegation comprises representatives from the Government, Hong Kong Trade Development Council, training institutions and the commercial sector. It will visit IT, telecommunications and digital entertainment companies in Silicon Valley and Vancouver to explore the latest development of the IT industry in the two places.

The delegation will attend the Softworld 2001 in Vancouver which is internationally recognized as the premiere partnering event for the technology industry. Hong Kong has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Canada on information and communications technology co-operation in May 1998. The visit to Softworld by the delegation is one of the major activities under the aegis of the MOU.

During his stay in Canada, Mr Siu will have a bilateral meeting with Mr Jean-Claude Bouchard, Assistant Deputy Minister of Industry Canada, to discuss issues of common interest under the MOU, including the development of IT and telecommunications in Hong Kong and Canada, and the Information Infrastructure Expo & Conference and the ITU TELECOM ASIA 2002 to be held in Hong Kong in March and December 2002 respectively.

Mr Siu will also give a presentation in the Softworld Conference in Vancouver and in the Communications 2001 Conference in Toronto on Hong Kong's 2001 Digital 21 IT Strategy and the business opportunities in the IT and telecommunications fields in Hong Kong.

In order to encourage Hong Kong IT talents overseas to return to work in Hong Kong, Mr Siu will take the opportunity to brief Hong Kong students in Stanford University, the University of British Columbia and the Simon Fraser University on the latest development of IT and telecommunications in Hong Kong
