HK-Canadian collaboration in wireless technology
November 6, 2001
The Hong Kong Wireless Technology Industry Association and the Wireless Innovation Network of British Columbia (WINBC) announced on November 5 the establishment of a partnership to promote collaboration in wireless technology between the member companies of the two associations.
The partnership was established between the two organisations at the "Softworld 2001" held in Vancouver. The arrangement not only enhances the partnership between the member companies of the two associations in Hong Kong and Canada, but also allows knowledge transfer between the two organisations of the wireless technology industry.
The partnership is a direct result of the visit of the Hong Kong delegation attending the "Softworld 2001" in Vancouver. It is a co-operative activity under the auspice of the Memorandum of Understanding on Information and Communication Technology signed between the Information Technology and Broadcasting Bureau of Hong Kong and Industry Canada.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by Mr Jean-Claude Bouchard, Assistant Deputy Minister of Industry Canada, Mr Alan Siu, Deputy Secretary for Information Technology and Broadcasting and Mrs Rosanna Ure, Director of Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office (Canada).
The partnership between the two associations contains the following aspects:
* Affiliation of the two associations;
* Knowledge transfer between the member companies of the two associations;
* Joint organisation of future events;
* Increased business opportunities for the member companies of the two associations; and
* Joint development and marketing of future products and service offerings.
The establishment of partnership arrangement between the two associations was facilitated by the Information Technology and Broadcasting Bureau (ITBB), the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Canada), the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (TDC), Industry Canada and the Consulate General of Canada in Hong Kong. It will help foster the development of wireless communication in Hong Kong and Canada and promote the healthy growth of the wireless industry in the two places.
The establishment of the partnership arrangement will be immediately followed by a visit of the WINBC to Hong Kong in March next year to attend the Hong Kong Information Infrastructure Expo and Conference co-organised by the Information Technology Services Department and TDC. The visit of WINBC's delegates will be sponsored by the Canadian National Research Council. Members of the WINBC will form part of the Canadian delegation which will be led by Mr Jean-Claude Bouchard to attend the event in Hong Kong.
During Softworld 2001, Mr Alan Siu also gave a presentation to the Canadian IT industry on the Digital 21 Information Technology Strategy of Hong Kong and how Hong Kong and Canadian IT industries could collaborate with each other for mutual benefits.
