Welcoming Address by Mr. Y C Cheng, Acting Director of Information Technology Services at the Computer 2001
24 May 2001
Mr Sutton, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,
The rapid development of IT and the convergence of technology and media have brought about new drivers for change and business opportunities to the whole society. The wide adoption of IT by the community has led to great changes which not only affect how we communicate with each other but also how we run business. Today, no business can afford to ignore e-commerce which has already been widely recognised as an important tool for maintaining our competitiveness in the Information Age.
The Government is fully committed to providing an enabling environment for e-commerce development. We have enacted the Electronic Transactions Ordinance so as to provide a clear legal framework for conducting electronic transactions. We have established a recognised public certification authority to provide an environment for secure electronic transactions. We have put Government services online through the Electronic Service Delivery Scheme not only to improve service delivery but also to stimulate the adoption of e-commerce. To build on our solid foundation for the use of IT and to provide a blueprint for our IT development, we have recently announced the 2001 Digital 21 Strategy to position Hong Kong as a leading e-business community and digital city in the globally connected world. The key areas of the Strategy are -
o to enhance the world class e-business environment in Hong Kong;
o to ensure that the Government continues to lead by example;
o to develop Hong Kong's workforce for the information economy;
o to strengthen the community for digital exploitation; and
o to leverage Hong Kong's strengths in the exploitation of enabling technologies.
Computer 2001 provides an excellent opportunity for our industry players, business users, IT professionals and the general public to exchange views and keep abreast of latest technologies in the market and best practices for their adoption. Being one of the most popular IT Expos in Hong Kong, Computer 2001 also provides a wide variety of selections, ranging from consumer products for individual visitors to integrated e-commerce solutions for corporate users. I am pleased to see that there are over 400 exhibitors showing their products and solutions at the Expo to tens of thousands of potential clients. No doubt this Expo will provide a good source of inspiration for corporations and individuals alike to better exploit IT in all their pursuits.
Ladies and gentlemen, I recommend you to seize this golden opportunity to find your business partners and solutions. Thank you.
