Speech by Mr. Alan Wong, Director of Information Technology
Services at the "Digi-Sign Launch Ceremony" on
22 August 2001
Justin, Distinguished guests, Ladies & Gentlemen, Good Afternoon.
Justin, first of all, let me thank you for inviting me here
today. I am indeed honoured to be able to share your pleasure
and excitement as you enter a brand new chapter in the history
of Tradelink - with the launch of Digi-Sign - the first private
company granted recognition under the Electronic Transactions
Ordinance as a recognized certification authority, for the provision
of services relating to the issuance of digital certificates
in Hong Kong.
In Hong Kong, one of the greatest challenges we are facing is
to ensure that all sectors of the community benefit from advances
in information technology. More and more people are going online
for personal communications and business transactions that are
conducted both domestically and internationally.
I'm delighted to see that the development of information technology
services in the market is being further strengthened by the
presence of another recognized certification authority, and
that this new entity is introducing more services with security
solutions. The goal of our voluntary recognition scheme for
certification authorities is to enhance public confidence in
electronic transactions with the use of recognized digital certificates.
The launch of Digi-Sign as a recognized certification authority
expands the base of our information security infrastructure
for different sectors of the community. More people or organisations
will be able to use recognized digital certificates of their
choice to conduct electronic transactions in accordance with
individual requirements.
One of the Key Result Areas of our 2001 Digital 21 Strategy
for IT development is to enhance our world-class e-business
environment. The use of recognized digital certificates under
a clear legal framework to support secure electronic transactions
has been one of the key strengths of our IT infrastructure.
With more choices catering to the needs of different sectors
of the community by the launch of the Digi-Sign digital certification
services today, I'm confident that it will have very positive
effects in further promoting the adoption of e-commerce in Hong
Kong. This will in turn help enhance our overall competitiveness
and economic well-being.
I am sure all of you will join me in offering Tradelink and
Digi-Sign our heartiest congratulations on the inauguration
of Digi-Sign today and in wishing Digi-Sign every success in
its endeavours.
Thank you.
