The OGCIO is responsible for articulating government-wide IT security policy and practices by providing technical advice and guidance to government bureaux and departments (B/Ds) in respect of the protection of government information systems, as well as establishing government-wide IT security management framework, standards and guidelines. Through various training & promotion activities and via different channels, B/Ds are furnished with these best practices and information about changes in information security.

The OGCIO is supporting the operation of the government's central management and coordination frameworks to oversee and steer the IT security implementation and standard of B/Ds. The OGCIO also maintains a 24x7 monitoring and reporting system for computer virus and government information security incident outbreaks.

Moreover, the OGCIO has taken proactive steps in combating threats related to IT security and computer viruses by continuously monitoring the development of IT security related vulnerabilities, threats and computer viruses, providing alerts and technical assistance to B/Ds in handling of information security incident and computer virus attack. Up-to-date information about information security are published at the InfoSec web portal site at http://www.infosec.gov.hk.
