Industry conference promotes development of cloud computing in Hong Kong and Guangdong (with photos)

About 200 cloud computing experts and industry players from Hong Kong and the Mainland attended the Hong Kong-Guangdong Cloud Industry Conference organised by the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer today (June 19).

The conference aimed to promote wider adoption of cloud computing service standards, certification and best practices, with a view to fostering development of the cloud industry in Hong Kong and Guangdong.

The Government Chief Information Officer, Mr Daniel Lai, and the Deputy Director-General of the Economic and Information Commission of Guangdong Province, Dr Zou Sheng, officiated at the opening of the conference.

Addressing the conference, Mr Lai said, "Cloud computing technology and the development of the cloud industry have matured in recent years. Many information service providers are actively developing cloud computing platforms to serve their customers. At the same time, this has raised widespread concern over the reliability and security of cloud services.

"In this regard, the Hong Kong/Guangdong Expert Committee on Cloud Computing Services and Standards has responded actively and positively. Apart from organising an annual conference, experts from the two places are planning collaboration in a number of areas such as cloud computing standardisation and certification of cloud services. Collaborative projects include compiling a practice guide for cloud service procurement and formulating service specifications and standards applicable to both places."

At today's conference, experts and industry leaders gave keynote addresses on how to set up safe, reliable and effectively managed cloud services and the relevant best practices.

There was also a discussion panel in which experts and service providers from the two places had in-depth exchanges on the keys to success for cloud services.

Videos of the speakers will be uploaded to the InfoCloud portal (www.infocloud.gov.hk) for public viewing and reference.
