Supply Chain

The project developed a product authentication (PA) solution platform to allow retail consumers to authenticate the product validity via RFID and barcode secure labels.  Three pilots involving four enterprises were implemented through the project.

The objectives of the project were:

  • To provide a low-cost, common approach for Hong Kong enterprises to build and consistently protect the value of their brand names through the sale of genuine, quality and safe products, especially the SMEs who often lacked the resources and knowhow to initiate and accomplish this goal;
  • To facilitate SME suppliers/manufacturers to gain trust and confidence from their buyers (e.g. sourcing offices) with the use of a PA-enabled, reliable track and trace system, so as to expand their distribution channels with increased supply chain visibility;
  • To drive secure supply chain management among SMEs in Hong Kong through on-line real time, best practices-based track and trace systems and processes;
  • To increase public awareness on product authenticity and buying legitimate products with easy-to-use tools and means; and
  • To enhance the integrity of Hong Kong brands and work towards shaping Hong Kong into a trusted brand centre.

The product authentication solution was operated on the BarcodePlus information portal (www.barcodeplus.com.hk) to provide the product quality information.  It provides an online platform for supply chain stakeholders such as the brand owners to post useful product information for public access.
