Household Survey on Information Technology Usage and Penetration

(A) Information technology penetration amongst households

  1. 49.7% of all households in Hong Kong had personal computers (PCs) at home
  2. 73.3% of all households with PCs at home had their PCs connected to Internet
  3. 88.6% of all households with PCs at home had Chinese software installed in their PCs

(B) Information technology usage amongst household members

  1. 43.1% of all persons aged 10 and over had used PC during the immediate twelve months before enumeration
  2. 30.3% of all persons aged 10 and over had used Internet service during the immediate twelve months before enumeration
  3. 29.8% of all persons aged 10 and over had knowledge of using Chinese input methods
  4. 84.9% of all persons aged 15 and over had used one or more types of electronic business services for personal matters during the immediate twelve months before enumeration
  5. 28.7% of all persons aged 15 and over were aware of the Electronic Service Delivery scheme

Survey on Information Technology Usage and Penetration in the Business Sector

(A) Personal computer (PC) usage

  1. 51.5% of establishments had PCs

(B) Internet usage

  1. 37.3% of establishments had Internet connection
  2. In 1999, total Internet charge for all establishments taken together was $819 million, up by 50.4% compared with 1998

(C) Web site usage

  1. 7.3% of establishments had web page/web site

(D) Electronic commerce

  1. 4.9% of establishments had ordered/purchased goods, services or information through electronic means
  2. 35.3% of establishments had received goods, services or information through electronic means
  3. 0.3% of establishments had sold goods, services or information through electronic means
  4. 8.1% of establishments had delivered goods, services or information through electronic means
  5. In 1999, business receipts received from selling goods, services or information through electronic means for all establishments taken together was $4.6 billion.
